UK invoicing guide
What to put on a UK invoice
Use this checklist before you send an invoice to a customer.
Invoice checklist
- A unique invoice number and invoice date.
- Your business name, address and contact details, plus your customer’s name and address.
- A clear description of the goods or services, the supply date and the charges.
- VAT where applicable and the total amount owed.
Sole traders and limited companies
If you trade as a sole trader, include your name and any trading name. If you use a business name, include an address where legal documents can be delivered. Limited companies should use the full name on their certificate of incorporation.
VAT and payment details
VAT invoices need extra information. Use the official checklist to review your requirements, then give the customer a due date and a payment reference so you can match the payment to the invoice.
